چکیده

Scattering of teleseismic body waves is conventionally used to investigate crustal and mantle structure using the so-called “receiver function” technique. This approach makes use of the fact that teleseismic events have nearvertical incidence upon horizontally layered structure, ensuring minimum phase, and assumes that source-time functions can be approximated by energy on the P component of motion. This approach has been successful in countless applications, including the characterization of layered crust and mantle, anisotropy and dipping structure. Results from a recent application of the receiver function method near Parkfield in Northern California suggest that crustal structure is highly anisotropic with some indication of shallow offset in crustal discontinuities across the San Andreas Fault (SAF) (Ozacar and Zandt, 2009). Here we use receiver functions to analyze crustal structure around the SAF near San Juan Bautista in Northern California by decomposing radial and transverse signals into first order harmonic modes. Variations of energy of the different modes with depth are then used to characterize teleseismic wave scattering from velocity contrasts across the San Andreas Fault.

Regional mapping of the crustal structure in southern California from receiver functions

[1] Lateral variations of the crustal structure in southern California are determined from receiver function (RF) studies using data from the Southern California Seismic Network broadband stations and Los Angeles Regional Seismic Experiment surveys. The results include crustal thickness estimates at the stations themselves, and where possible, cross sections are drawn. The large-scale Moho dept...

Fault interactions and large complex earthquakes in the Los Angeles area.

Faults in complex tectonic environments interact in various ways, including triggered rupture of one fault by another, that may increase seismic hazard in the surrounding region. We model static and dynamic fault interactions between the strike-slip and thrust fault systems in southern California. We find that rupture of the Sierra Madre-Cucamonga thrust fault system is unlikely to trigger rupt...

Geometrical impact of the San Andreas Fault on stress and seismicity in California

[1] Most large earthquakes in northern and central California clustered along the main trace of the San Andreas Fault (SAF), the North American-Pacific plate boundary. However, in southern California earthquakes were rather scattered. Here we suggest that such alongstrike variation of seismicity may largely reflect the geometrical impact of the SAF. Using a dynamic finite element model that inc...

Viscoelastic earthquake cycle models with deep stress-driven creep along the San Andreas fault system

[1] We develop a two-dimensional boundary element earthquake cycle model including deep interseismic creep on vertical strike-slip faults in an elastic lithosphere coupled to a viscoelastic asthenosphere. Uniform slip on the upper part of the fault is prescribed periodically to represent great strike-slip earthquakes. Below the coseismic rupture the fault creeps in response to lithospheric shea...

Model Uncertainties of the 2002 Update of California Seismic Hazard Maps

In this article we present and explore the source and ground-motion model uncertainty and parametric sensitivity for the 2002 update of the California probabilistic seismic hazard maps. Our approach is to implement a Monte Carlo simulation that allows for independent sampling from fault to fault in each simulation. The source-distance dependent characteristics of the uncertainty maps of seismic...
